What is the queen bee's song?

The singing of the queen bee is a very special sound, a form of communication within the hive. It often presents itself as a very important, loud and persistent sound. The song of the queen bee is undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary curiosities present in the world of bees. Who better than she could emit a real song, as she is the most important insect within the hive, responsible for the entire reproduction of the family.

When and why does the queen bee sing?

We have already mentioned that the singing of the queen bee is a means of communication and as such is used for different purposes. In one case, the queen's song occurs to announce the birth of a new queen within the hive, so as to avoid clashes between two queens, where one of them will have to give way to the stronger one, in a real duel. Another case is when the old queen bee is about to swarm and sings with the intention of ensuring that a new queen is elected so as not to risk leaving the other bees orphaned and without a queen bee.

Difference in the song of virgin and fertilised bees

Virgin and fertilised queen bees can also be distinguished by their sound. In fact, the singing is different; the former, the virgin bees, produce a higher-pitched, shrill sound, while the latter, the fertilised queen bees, the sound is more mature and regular. The song of the queen bee constitutes one of the fundamental and necessary elements for maintaining balance, order and well-being within the hive. A communication with precise objectives, directed towards the worker bees and drones of the hive, in order to get their special attention and to warn them that she is to be the only queen of the entire hive. The sound is important to get the worker bees to 'trap' other queens inside their cells until the 'sounding' queen has left. Thus, fighting between several queens is avoided.

Adopt your Queen Bee and her hive

The queen bee is the most important insect within the hive, in fact her main task is to lay the eggs necessary to ensure the survival of the species. But it is also crucial to emphasise, how fundamental all bees are to keeping the hive in balance, each with their proper role, from the scavenger, to the woodcutter or theworker. All of them essential, for themselves and for the entire planet, preserving biodiversity. That is why, today, it has become our duty to do something, albeit small, but concrete. A bee can make a difference and protect them with technology even more. Find out how at this link
