El Niño linked to mass extinction 252 million years ago

• El Niño Connection: researchers have linked extreme El Niño-like conditions to the mass extinction that wiped out 90% of Earth’s species 252 million years ago.

• Climate Shifts: the warming oceans and disrupted weather patterns caused widespread environmental destruction, similar to modern climate impacts.

• Lessons for Today: the study highlights the potential dangers of current climate change, with El Niño patterns today driving extreme weather and ecosystem disruptions.

• Historical Impact: the Permian extinction is the most severe extinction event in Earth’s history, with volcanic activity and global warming playing key roles.
