"To consider the company as an independent economic entity that, like a foreign body, is not fully integrated into the world in which we all live, is an outdated concept. The company considers the environment and the protection of it as a prerequisite of existence for itself." This is how Francesco Lanzani, President of Phoenix Contact, responds to the question "why is biodiversity crucial for you? From here it is clear that biodiversity has a profound value for Phoenix Contact, which develops its own philosophy of life around the concept of sustainability. Biological diversity contributes to the balance of ecosystems, supporting the environmental stability required for the various areas of human life. Phoenix Contact and the path to corporate sustainability

But at what point did Phoenix Contact begin to actively engage in sustainability? The President tells us that it has been a path of progressive awareness, guided by the firm will of the management and the vision of the ownership, which, over the years, has brought the company to full maturity. What perhaps has a definite starting point was the explicit dissemination and sharing of these values within the company, so that they could be understood, experienced on a daily basis and consequently supported. "Ultimately, the company is natively designed to be in line with social and governance aspects, two of the crucial dimensions of sustainability, says Lanzani. The company has changed its sensitivity to environmental aspects over time, but has always ensured a spirit of sharing, inclusiveness, familiarity and entrepreneurial independence, typical of virtuous companies when it comes to sustainability.

Phoenix Contact: la partnership con 3Bee

We now come to the partnership with 3Bee, defined by the President as an important opportunity, born out of shared values and vision. "Thanks to this special partnership, we were able to promote biodiversity and environmental sustainability, sharing these concepts with greater emphasis and clarity to all our employees as well. Through the collaboration with 3Bee, we were able to create our Biodiversity Oasis, located in Mezzago, in the province of Milan," says Francesco Lanzani. The Biodiversity Oasis of Phoenix Contact now counts 250 nectariferous plants that guarantee nourishment to the pollinating insects present in the area, as well as 5 technological beehives for environmental biomonitoring, installed this spring.

The next steps of the Oasis 3Bee biodiversity project

The next steps will consist in installing five Polly X at the Oasis, i.e. shelters for solitary bees (osmias) that, thanks to an IoT device, will monitor a number of important environmental indicators, including air quality. In addition, work will begin in 2025 on a small artificial biolago, which will complete the project in 2026. The biolago is designed to support the ecosystem in a natural way, promoting the regeneration of biodiversity through biological processes. "Thanks to 3Bee, we have extended our commitment to biodiversity, even in an area where we could not have done so with our typical corporate actions, says the President of Phoenix Contact.

Dissemination and training for company employees
Outreach, training, and awareness also play a crucial role for Phoenix Contact, which considers sharing the corporate purpose, vision, and values that underpin its corporate strategy as one of the keys to success. "We are aware that the contribution of each individual is fundamental in generating a unified and harmonious corporate identity; for this reason we are committed to creating a stimulating, familiar and rewarding working environment. - says Francesco Lanzani - On the occasion of our 100th anniversary, the parent company and subsidiaries around the world organised days of celebration and sharing of achievements over the years, participating in initiatives with the aim of promoting sustainable development (SDGs), thus with a focus on the environment."

Training and team building events with 3Bee
In this context, the Italian branch of Phoenix Contact realised, on 14 September 2023, a event in collaboration with 3Bee, to present to its collaborators and stakeholders the biodiversity monitoring, protection and regeneration project: a special Masterclass held by 3Bee on the importance of pollinators and their protection, which is so necessary to ensure a future for our planet. "In the coming months, some of our most adventurous colleagues will also have the opportunity to experience the apiary at our Oasis," adds the President of Phoenix Contact, "a special opportunity to get closer to the world of bees and pollinating insects, observe their precious work first-hand, discover the most interesting facts and understand their fundamental role for ecosystems.

"The wish for Phoenix Contact is to continue on this path of sustainable development, finding and consolidating a balance between business objectives and our purpose. This would imply that the efforts and strategy adopted for the realisation of an 'All Electric Society' have indeed contributed to a better world and a stronger and more aware society. I hope that this can also serve as an example for other realities, so that we can achieve a 'biodiverse future', everyone making their own contribution, no-one excluded". This is what Francesco Lanzani, President of Phoenix Contact, hopes for the next 10 years. Among the objectives, also supported by the project Oasis 3Bee of Biodiversity, is to monitor as much as possible the effects of the activities carried out and their environmental impact, in order to transfer, with transparency, information on the results achieved, in a perspective of open dialogue with the stakeholders and the community.
