Honey ants: who they are
Honey ants (Myrmecocystus) are unique in their feeding behavior, which distinguishes them from many other ant species. These ants primarily feed on a sugary substance called honeydew, produced by aphids, small parasitic insects commonly known as plant lice. Due to this dietary characteristic, honey ants have particularly adapted to life in vegetated areas, predominantly in North America, where aphids abound.
