The importance of bees
Bees, both honey bees and solitary bees, are fundamental pollinators. On their daily work depends about 70% of crops and almost 90% of wild plants. Without them, we would no longer be able to eat most of the foods we find on our tables every day: cherries, apples, pears, citrus fruits, peaches, kiwis, chestnuts, melons, courgettes, carrots, onions, etc.
Natural habitats, ecosystems and biodiversity itself also rely on pollination, which gives many plants the opportunity to proliferate and spread.
World Bee Day not only wants to highlight how dependent we are on these tiny animals, but also what threats are endangering their well-being and survival. Indeed, climate change, the progressive loss of natural habitats, the abuse of pesticides and agro-medicines in agriculture, diseases, pests and predators are creating an increasingly less bee-friendly environment.
