Sustainability and environmental responsibility: the O.M.S. case.

A very topical issue nowadays is the global warming we are witnessing, which is largely determined by human activities. These are linked to the complex natural variations in the climate resulting in what is known as climate change. Indeed, the release of large amounts of Co2 into the earth's atmosphere is the primary cause of global warming. Massive deforestation only worsens the problem, as trees are no longer able to absorb Co2. Industrialisation, the indiscriminate development of large cities and the infrastructural needs of transport development have caused a significant reduction in biodiversity. On the contrary, biodiversity is very important in decreasing the fragility of the ecosystems in which we live.

The massive use of non-renewable resources, in addition to causing air pollution and a huge release of Co2 into the environment, results in the worrying reduction of available resources that the planet struggles to regenerate. To reverse this trend, it is necessary to develop systems that ensure the development of human activities and the economy, but with the least possible impact on the planet. This means learning to live within the limits of one Planet in order to guarantee resources for future generations as well. What better actor can play this role than the company? Proving to be a sustainable business has become one of the success factors for the coming years.

We asked Erika Gizzi, Adminastrive & Finance Officer and Human Resources Responsible of O.M.S., what role do companies play and how can they foster sustainable development? Sustainability and environmental responsibility are extremely central issues for our company. For years, we have been using an Environmental Management System in accordance with ISO 14001, and compliance with and monitoring of the indicators lead the way in environmental protection, resource saving and cost reduction. Our sector is the metalworking industry, and we specialise in precision machining for metal removal. In this type of machining, the waste of material that occurs during the production process is physiological, which necessarily leads to a waste of resources.

To curb this problem, we have equipped our factories with plants capable of recovering processing waste by compacting it and separating the oils that are harmful to the environment. In this way, according to the principle of the circular economy, it is possible to reuse raw materials that are reintroduced into the production cycle, drastically reducing waste. We favour the consumption of energy from renewable sources, in fact, a 200 kW photovoltaic system is installed at our Segni plant, covering 70% of our energy needs.

What is O.M.S.'s daily commitment to the environment within the company and the surrounding environment? O.M.S. is developed within an area surrounded by green areas, which is why we have set ourselves the goal of halving our CO2 emissions by 2030. To do this, we must hold firmly to the principles that have brought us this far and the continuous monitoring and improvement of our production processes aimed at minimising our impact on the environment in which we find ourselves.

How did the idea of joining 3Bee's 'Pollinate the Planet' CSR project come about? 2022 is a very important year for O.M.S. as we celebrate 40 years in business. We wanted to leave an important mark as a reminder of this date and started looking for projects that would complement our eco-friendly policy. While surfing the Internet, we discovered 3Bee. We were immediately struck by the reality it represents. That is why we decided to take an active part in this project to protect bees and all that they represent for the environment.

As everyone knows, ensuring the continuity of biodiversity allows us to ensure the livability of the planet for all future generations. Bees are fundamental insects that provide important ecological benefits and services to society. With their pollination they perform a strategic function for the conservation of flora, contributing to the improvement and maintenance of this biodiversity. A decrease in bees can therefore represent a major threat to natural ecosystems. This project thus allows us to take further steps towards our sustainability goals and make a tangible contribution to the environment around us.
