    Bee mortality

Over the last 40 years, there has been an increase in bee mortality with a consequent decrease in the number of colonies, a phenomenon linked to: intensive use of agro-pharmaceuticals (neonicotinoids above all); increasing presence of pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, parasites (e.g. the Varroa destructor mite) and predators (e.g. the Vespa velutina); malnutrition and trauma related to poor hive management; climate change.

    The importance of bees

Seventy-five per cent of food production depends on pollinating insects whose value amounts to $577 billion. Of these insects, 16 per cent are at risk of extinction and 40 per cent of bees and wild butterflies are at greatest risk of extinction. Researchers recall that bees are of great economic importance, as natural pollination by insects is worth as much as USD 3 billion annually. If this negative trend continues, we will soon have to say goodbye to many foods, including almonds, blueberries, coffee, orange juice, pumpkin seeds, raspberries, strawberries, sunflower seeds, and chocolate.
