Why tell children about biodiversity?
The biodiversity encompasses all the living organisms on Earth, both animal and plant, that populate and make up the planet's various ecosystems. According to the ISPRA, biodiversity comprises different types of 'diversity': ecosystem diversity, which represents the number and variety of habitats on Earth, both natural and urban, in which humans, animals and plants live and evolve; the species diversity, which refers to the variety of species present in a given area and their rarity or abundance; the genetic diversity, i.e. the difference of genes within a species, which defines its entire genetic heritage. In recent years, much has been said about biodiversity because of human-induced climate change, which threatens the abundance of life on Earth. Educating children about biodiversity is crucial to make them understand the value of the diversity of life and the importance of protecting ecosystems.
