    Introduction

In 2022, French multinational Pernod Ricard signed an innovative partnership with 3Bee, a climate-tech company specialising in biodiversity conservation. The collaboration has given rise to the "Bees&Trees" project, an ambitious three-year initiative to create a biodiversity oasis at Pernod Ricard Italia's headquarters in Milan. Pernod Ricard is thus actively involved in protecting and regenerating biodiversity. The company has a web page called "Biodiversity Oasis" listing all the biodiversity projects carried out in collaboration with 3Bee.

    Background and objectives

The 3Bee team, made up of engineers, biologists, agronomists, data scientists and communicators, in constant exchange with Pernod Ricard's contacts, gathered the company's needs and developed an action plan with clear objectives. The main aim of the project was twofold: to protect and promote the bee population, and to contribute to the fight against climate change by absorbing CO2. The project comprised three main phases: the installation of a technological apiary, theplanting of a nectariferous forest and the installation of a Polly house on the company's premises. All three phases were accompanied by an employee awareness-raising process characterised by their active participation.

    Project phases

Phase one: Training and education The collaboration began in 2022 with the sponsorship of a corporate apiary and a training course offered by 3Bee to Pernod Ricard employees on the importance of bees in our ecosystem. In the summer, the company organised atasting event outside Milan, which brought together all employees for aday of training in the apiary. Second phase: expansion of the apiary In 2023, Pernod expanded its oasis by planting a forest of 100 nectar trees in the province of Milan. This significantly increased the apiary's ability to produce honey and maintain a bee population. Third phase: planting the forest and creating the Polly House In 2023, a forest planting event was organised, followed by a final Academy session and honey tasting at Villa Necchi. Finally, Pernod Ricard has installed a Polly house on its premises.

    Results and impact

The partnership with 3Bee has enabled Pernod Ricard to have a significant environmental and social impact: the company now breeds 1.5 million bees, which pollinate 1.5 billion flowers, whilethe 150 nectar-producing trees planted become the source of 97 kg of nectar and absorb 3.6 million kg of CO2. In addition, the project actively supports a beekeeper and a farmer, underlining Pernod Ricard's commitment to global and inclusive sustainable development.

    Conclusion

The partnership between Pernod Ricard and 3Bee has shown how companies can help promote biodiversity and combat climate change. Thanks to 3Bee's multidisciplinary approach and expertise, Pernod Ricard was able to embark on a green and sustainable path, generating benefits not only for the environment, but also for the community and its employees. The success of the "Bees&Trees" project is an example of how innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand.
