Banning the 'Killer' of Bees Dangerous to Humans

The bee 'killer' of which we speak is the active substance methiocarb, contained in plant protection products. The decision comes from the European Commission, which, through a special regulation signed on 18 November, did not renew its approval for use.

    Risks to human health

This confirms the risks to human health, in particular that of farmers who come into contact with it through breathing it in during the sowing season, despite the fact that the devices are used according to regulations. The European Commission's approval would expire in July 2020, but the decision was taken in advance following the member states' submission of a report to the European Food Safety Authority. The Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed was also involved in the case. According to the Authority, 'an unacceptable risk to workers was identified, also taking into account the use of personal protective equipment, as well as a high risk to birds, mammals and earthworms'. a

    Italy's decisive role

Italy played a key role in reaching this decision, thanks to the investigation by the Procura di Udine conducted on several hundred farmers for using such products in maize cultivation. According to expert opinions, commissioned from a pool of experts, the disappearance of bees is due precisely to this substance, which serves to defend plants from parasites, favouring a more abundant harvest. The investigation carried out in Udine therefore had the merit of pointing out the situation and uncovering the link between the substance and the damage to the animals. Indeed, the substance has a deleterious effect on the environment as it is absorbed by bees, which transport it to their hives and then suffer its effects and die.

    Order execution time

The EU requires member states to withdraw permits by 2 January 2020, extending the tolerance until 3 April. The ministry set 31 December as the deadline for the marketing stop. Until 31 January 2020 the revoked plant protection products can be used for seed treatment. Disposal must take place by 29 February and the use of the products for treatment other than seed treatment will be allowed until 3 April.
