The calculation of a company's environmental footprint is based on standardized methodologies, including the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) for products and the Organization Environmental Footprint (OEF) for company activities. Both are based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), a tool that enables the measurement of the environmental impacts of a product or service throughout all stages of its life cycle: from raw material extraction to production, distribution, use, and end of life. To proceed, one starts with the collection of company data (energy consumption, raw materials, waste, transportation, emissions), normalizes the data according to functional units, and applies the environmental coefficients provided by databases (e.g., Ecoinvent). The final result is a set of environmental indicators (CO₂, water consumption, acidification, ecotoxicity, etc.) expressed in scientific units.

Integrating the calculation of the environmental footprint into business processes represents a strategic investment. In the era of ecological transition, European regulations, primarily the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the ESRS standards, require companies to report their environmental performance in a transparent and standardized way. The environmental footprint is one of the most comprehensive tools to meet these obligations, but also to differentiate in the market, improve resource efficiency, attract green capital, and strengthen brand reputation. Furthermore, it allows anticipating regulatory and climatic risks, improving stakeholder dialogue, and accessing public incentives. In an increasingly sustainability-conscious competitive context, monitoring the environmental footprint becomes an integral part of solid ESG governance oriented toward creating shared and lasting value.
