Desertification: causes and global impacts
desertification is a complex and multifactorial phenomenon, caused mainly by climate change, unsustainable use of natural resources and deforestation. Global warming and changes in precipitation patterns contribute to the diminution of water resources and the loss of soil fertility. Human activity, such as intensive agriculture, inefficient irrigation and uncontrolled urbanisation, accelerates this process. Desertification has significant impacts on the environment, biodiversity and local communities. Degraded lands cannot sustain vegetation and ecosystems, causing loss of habitat and reduced agricultural productivity. Populations dependent on these lands face food shortages, poverty and social instability. Moreover, desertification increases the risk of extreme weather events such as sandstorms and fires, further exacerbating environmental degradation.
