    3Bee's best practice in photovoltaics

The loss of biodiversity represents a serious threat to our planet. It is an urgent problem that requires innovative solutions and cutting-edge technology. In this context, Nature Tech 3Bee has established itself as a pioneer in the development of technologies and services dedicated to monitoring and protecting biodiversity. Our approach is based on three pillars: monitoring, regeneration and education. In addition, we have developed several cutting-edge environmental technologies, including Hive-Tech, Flora and Spectrum. These technologies, together with our commitment to biodiversity conservation, allowed us to be chosen by SolarPower Europe to be included within the new Agrisolar Best Practice Guidelines. 3Bee's projects and services have been selected as best practice for the regeneration, protection and monitoring of biodiversity in the PV industry.

    The regeneration project selected

3Bee was included in the new Agrisolar Best Practice Guidelines for the ARCA - Francaviglia project, which covers 5.2 hectares with a total capacity of 1 MW. The project was realised together with one of the world's largest companies in the renewable energy sector. With the aim of testing potential actions to improve local biodiversity, the company involved 3Bee to design an intervention on the site to restore biodiversity by introducing plants with high nectariferous potential within the area. In particular, two activities were carried out: the implementation of a regeneration project based on high-potential nectariferous plants and the establishment of a monitoring protocol.

The technologies and the monitoring protocol

The monitoring protocol has been implemented thanks to the following technologies from 3Bee:
    - Hive-Tech: a 4.0 hive consisting of a network of IoT sensors that monitor in real time the health and 'hunger' status of the bees, but also the presence of surrounding biodiversity.
    - Spectrum: the environmental sound analysis system through which it is possible to detect and classify the biodiversity present in an area and identify the presence of specific species such as bees, pollinating insects and birds. This technology recorded data such as the presence, abundance and diversity of pollinators, thus enabling the overall impact of introduced plant species on local pollinators to be assessed.

    First results of the project

Preliminary results indicate a significant improvement: approximately 10% more local pollinators than expected levels. This is a positive result with considerable potential for the surrounding agricultural area, as the increase in pollinating insects will help improve ecosystem services to the benefit of local farms and their crops. 3Bee recognises the reciprocal benefits that result from the synergy between renewable energy and nature conservation and is committed to the realisation of advant-garde agri-voltaic projects, aimed at mitigating the environmental impact of photovoltaic (PV) and wind farms (Beenergy). The success of these experiences further confirms the compatibility of renewable energies and the protection of biodiversity.

Biodiversity and photovoltaics: a possible combination

Thanks to Hive-Tech technologies, Spectrum and Flora - the NDVI analysis system based on the use of high-resolution satellite data, developed in collaboration with ESA (European Space Agency), which allow for a precise and timely assessment of the floral diversity present in an area - 3Bee provides clear and transparent data that allow for an understanding of what mitigation actions to take for biodiversity, ensuring the conservation and growth of the various species. 3Bee also provides accurate data, useful in terms of communication, but also insertable within the corporate sustainability report. To date, 3Bee's technology and services have been integrated into more than 50 Agri-PV plants across Europe, facilitating the integration of agriculture, renewable energy production and biodiversity protection.
