10 Biodiversity Oases of 3Bee to help Milan

3Bee has allocated 10 Biodiversity Oases to be placed on private and communal land in Milan after last July's cloudburst. The aim? To create urban habitats methodically constructed by agronomists and engineers to help the city get back on its feet and become even greener and more sustainable.

    Milan cloudburst: restoring environmental damage

Making Milan greener and more sustainable with the creation of ten Oases of Biodiversity. This is the goal of 3Bee, the Nature Tech company leading the way in protecting biodiversity through technology. Following the devastating burst that hit Milan last July, 3Bee recently decided to divert a considerable part of its resources to a city that has seen many of itsgreen areas devastated. "In addition to the urbanistic damage, the environmental damage should not be underestimated," explains Niccolò Calandri, CEO of 3Bee, "because the destruction of parks has meant the disappearance of habitats for pollinators, especially for wild bees.

Biodiversity Oases for Milan: 3Bee's initiative

3Bee's goal is therefore to create ten Oases of Biodiversity, i.e. true ecological niches, hospitable environments for pollinator insects, helping to plant around ten thousand trees. "Actually, the project also concerns cities in the hinterland, such as Assago and Monza," continues Calandri, "where we have already managed to find land to take over. In Milan, on the other hand, it is a bit more difficult to find vacant lots not intended for building". A project for the benefit of the whole city, whose green areas must be restored.

    Biodiversity Oasis in the City

But what are the Oases of Biodiversity? They are areas of between 0.5 and 5 hectares, where 3Bee plants trees that are defined in the jargon as having high ecostemical value. These are species suited to the environmental context. Often incorrect planting activities are carried out in the city, purely for aesthetic purposes, which can create non-native and even dangerous ecosystems. The climate change is making us realise that our cities will have to be resilient to the weather, especially to hot weather and increasingly intense cloudbursts.

    Oasis 3Bee: technology for biodiversity

The Oases of Biodiversity are equipped with advanced technological systems that allow them to be monitored at all times. First of all, thanks to the satellite surveys of the ESA, the European Space Agency, with which 3Bee has been collaborating for some time now. Secondly, the oases are monitored by means of special sensors that 'listen' to the messages that pollinators exchange with each other and make it possible to understand their state of health. This makes it possible to receive data that are always up-to-date and to intervene with targeted actions when necessary.

A biodiversity plan for the city of Milan

Little more than a month has passed since the violent storm that hit Milan. Trees have collapsed, natural habitats, parks, gardens and more have been affected. The time has come to attach the right importance to green space management: we must study how biodiversity is distributed in Milan and develop concrete and measurable interventions. We need a targeted, scientific and prudent biodiversity plan for the city: only in this way will we become resilient to the most adverse weather patterns we will experience in the coming years. 3Bee's goal is to make Milan the capital of urban biodiversity in Europe, starting with these 10 Oases of Biodiversity, because our cities will only flourish if we really care about the protection of pollinating insects.
