Why the Adopt-a-Hive Project?
As you all already know, bees are precious, let's even say indispensable. Just think that a single hive can pollinate up to 225,000 flowers a day. Their work is irreplaceable, let's say they contribute directly to the survival of the planet. Imagine a world without bees, a world in which coffee, lemons, chocolate, onions, apples, carrots, watermelons, citrus fruits, pears, almonds, peaches, kiwis, chestnuts, cherries, apricots, plums, melons, tomatoes, courgettes, soya, sunflowers, rapeseed, cucumbers, celery, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli would not exist. These crops are partially or fully dependent on pollination by bees. Of the 100 crops that make up 90 per cent of the world's food production, as many as 71 are tied to the pollination work of bees! To get an idea of the impact of bees on our tables, think that in Europe alone, as many as 4,000 different crops grow thanks to them.
