3Bee Biodiversity Oasis burns in Apulia

A devastating fire consumed one of 3Bee's largest and most valuable Biodiversity Oases in Puglia on the afternoon of 19 July, marking a sad chapter in the fight to preserve our environment. 3Bee technicians estimate that the habitat will take at least 10 years to regenerate.

The impact of the fire at the Palombaio Oasis

The fire that occurred in Palombaio - Frazione di Bitonto (BA) had a significantly negative impact on the local biodiversity. The destruction of vital resources and the entire habitat has greatly affected the wild flora and fauna that the Oasis housed: in the most recent plantings, 3Bee planted - as per the preliminary study and analysis - scalar-flowering nectariferous trees of the most common species such as apple, pear, wild cherry and ash trees. In addition to the loss of animal and plant life, the fire has also damaged the microbial biodiversity of the soil, and the drought will worsen the situation.

    3Bee's commitment to habitat restoration

3Bee is strongly committed to the immediate support and restoration of the habitat:
. "Our recovery plan envisages the planting of new nectar plants to help nature recover from the devastation, but restoration operations in the area will unfortunately only be possible from next autumn. In the meantime, every time an oasis is burnt down, we will create a new one, twice as big. Our objective is to reach more than 10,000 Oases created in less than two years,' says Niccolò Calandri, the company's CEO.
The company's CEO, Niccolò Calandri, explains. Among the 2000 registered plants, more than 400 were in adoption and supported by 6 national companies, engaged in 3Bee's conservation project, and another 300 were selected and grown by private citizens thanks to 3Bee's "Adopt a Nectariferous Tree" project. This disaster also involves entire communities of people who care about the preservation of the environment and have actively contributed to its protection

The figure of the 'Grower': a key role for regeneration

The Oases of Biodiversity of 3Bee in Apulia are a tangible example of how man can act in harmony with nature. These projects aim to safeguard native flora and fauna, creating a habitat where biodiversity can flourish. The burning of this oasis is therefore a blow not only to the region, but to all of us. At the heart of this project is the figure of the Grower, a local farmer who has been the guardian of this Biodiversity Oasis. The Grower, Giuseppe Sannicandro of the Non-profit association Regen di Palombaio has joined the 3Bee regeneration project. The community of associates is dedicated on a daily basis to spreading the principles of regenerative agriculture and agroforestry, supporting the ecological culture of reuse and educating in the creation of solidarity networks of ecological economy, also playing a crucial role in sensitising our natural heritage.

    The sad reality of fires

Unfortunately, every summer the region of Puglia and many other areas of Italy have to face the sad reality of fires. The number of fires has been steadily increasing over time, contributing significantly to the destruction of our natural heritage. According to the ISPRA, in 2022, the Italian territory was affected by fires of medium and large extensions (greater than one hectare) for more than 68500 hectares, an area almost equal to the extension of the Gran Paradiso National Park. "The causes of fires can be multiple, and at the moment we have no information indicating that the fire in the 3Bee Oasis was intentional," the company reports. "However, we would like to emphasise that it is neither legal nor safe to light fires, except for precise forest management practices that are only permitted at certain times of the year according to strict regional directives and by the territorial bodies in charge.

Regenerating biodiversity through 3Bee nectariferous forests

In the face of this statistically increasing situation, we can prevent future catastrophes such as this one by thoroughly understanding the issue and adopting sustainable agricultural practices. With the support of virtuous entities and businesses, we can identify solid regional and national protection strategies, in order to continue the important fight against climate change and achieve concrete results. 3Bee's goal is to create more than 10,000 Oases of Biodiversity in less than two years, with pollinator refuges and nectariferous forests. Would you like to join the forest project with your company to help regenerate biodiversity?
