December 5: History of World Soil Day
The need to dedicate a day to soil has well-defined institutional roots. The idea of an international day was initially promoted by the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) in 2002. Formal international recognition came in December 2013, when the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) formally designated December 5 as World Soil Day. The date was also chosen in honor of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, a key supporter of the cause. Since then, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), through its Global Soil Partnership (GSP), has been mandated to facilitate and coordinate the event, setting the annual theme. This mandate underscores the urgency of adopting sustainable practices, a message that 3Bee and XNatura advocate for, bringing technological solutions for monitoring business activities on nature, climate, and biodiversity.
