Agenda 2030 and 17 Sustainable Development Goals

The 2030 Agenda, signed in 2015 by the governments of the 193 member countries of the United Nations and approved by the UN General Assembly. The Agenda consists of esg-italia-arretra-sullo-sviluppo-sostenibile" target="_blank">17 Sustainable Development Goals, known as Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The goals must be achieved by 2030, in the environmental, economic, social and institutional spheres. This is a global challenge involving all countries and the various components of society, including the private sector, the public sector, civil society, information workers and culture. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals address a number of crucial development issues, balancing the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic, social and ecological.

Agenda 2030: Progress on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals

The fifth edition of the Europe Sustainable Development Report 2023/24, published by the UNO, revealed that none of the 17 sustainable development goals of the UN 2030 Agenda are on track to be achieved. This report assesses progress towards these goals by 27 European countries, the candidate countries for EU membership and other European countries for geographical reasons, such as the UK, Switzerland and Turkey. Europe plays a crucial role in the promotion of sustainability, as European sustainability regulations are considered a global reference point, influencing the behaviour of institutions, consumers, investors, businesses, farmers, NGOs and social organisations.

The 2030 Agenda comes to a standstill

The sustainable development goals set out in the 2030 Agenda are suffering a setback, with 85% of the 167 targets reporting a lack of progress or even regression. The most significant setbacks are in the field ofESG-applicazione-ambito-sociale-S" target="_blank">economic, health, social and gender equality. Companies in transition need concrete support to be able to achieve the esg-e-opportunita-per-le-pmi" target="_blank">ESG goals. With this in mind, 3Bee, the nature tech company that develops technologies for biodiversity protection supports companies in achieving ESG goals through the realisation of tangible and measurable biodiversity regeneration projects.

    Indice "Leave No One Behind"

The lack of progress in achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda is confirmed by the UN's "Leave No One Behind" Index. This is an indicator that corrects for outliers that may emerge when aggregating the results of all countries. With this tool, it is possible to identify disparities between European countries and identify areas that require more attention from policy makers. The 'Leave No One Behind' index shows an increase in the barriers people face in accessing services, resources, career and educational opportunities. Such inequalities not only hinder social mobility and brake economic growth, but can also fuel extreme trends in society and lead to new conflicts.

European elections 2024: turning point for the future

The upcoming European elections in June 2024 are of crucial importance, as the vote to elect the new European Parliament will pave the way for the formation of the future European Commission, the politically independent executive body of the European Union. This Commission is defined by the national leaders in the European Council, taking into account the outcome of the parliamentary elections. The 27 new members of the Commission will also have to define the next multi-annual EU budget and negotiate Europe's role in the future global agenda for sustainable development beyond 2030. The United Nations Network for Sustainable sustainable development calls on the next European Parliament, the next European Commission and the European Council to adopt, within one year after the elections, a joint political declaration reaffirming the Union's commitment to the sustainable development goals.

    Agenda 2030 and climate change

Long before the pandemic crisis, international conflicts and the increasingly evident effects of climate change, a slowdown in the path towards greater sustainability was observed. UN economists had pointed out that gradual progress and policy changes were not enough and that poverty, both relative and absolute, was increasing. Currently, there is an increase in social fragmentation and political polarisation throughout the world. In this context, the European Green Deal, the plan to transform the European Union into a zero-emission economy that respects individual rights, plays a key role. Europe has the potential to act as a stimulus and driver in environmental and social development on a global level, thanks to its adherence to the three pillars of global cooperation: strong institutions, agreed standards and international law.

    Biodiversity and Agenda 2030

To achieve the biodiversity goals of the 2030 Agenda, it is crucial to promote international cooperation and a global commitment. In particular, Agenda Goal 15, known as "Life on Earth", aims to protect, restore and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems. There are several instruments and initiatives that support the implementation of biodiversity actions, including: the international CBC convention aimed at conserving biodiversity; the IPBES that provides scientific information on the state of biodiversity; the WDPA collects information on protected areas worldwide. In line with Goal 15 of the 2030 Agenda, 3Bee implements pollinator and habitat conservation projects, such as the esg/le-oasi-business/" target="_blank">Oases of Biodiversity, with the aim of helping to preserve life on Earth and biological diversity.

    Europe and Sustainability: What Perspectives?

Europe can play a leading role in international coordination for the creation of a new model of shared prosperity through its external action. The European Investment Bank (EIB), as the financial arm of the European Union, is considered the world's leading multilateral financial institution and also one of the main financiers of global climate initiatives. In the context of the UN 2030 Agenda, which globally coordinates the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the European-style multilateral approach is considered the only one capable of addressing the unprecedented challenges facing humanity and the planet. However, although this is valid from a theoretical point of view, Europe has to confront reality. The UN report shows that at this rate, no European country, and most likely no country in the world, will achieve one third of the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

Italy and Agenda 2030: still a long way to go

According to the research Ipsos published in the AsviS 2023 Report, there are some interesting data regarding the awareness of the Italian population about the importance of sustainable development. However, Goal 17 - Partnership for the Goals - is considered the last of the perceived priorities, being indicated by only 3% of the population as one of the most relevant goals. It is important to note that 19% instead consider all SDGs to be equally important. In the transition phase for companies, 3Bee offers significant support to sustainability professionals through the CSR Network, providing esg-per-le-aziende-5-cose-da-sapere" target="_blank">continuous training with webinars, video lectures and events.
