    Presentation of SDG Goal 4

Goal 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aims to ensure inclusive and equitable education for all, from girls and boys to the most vulnerable and marginalised. Education is a crucial factor in improving the lives of people, communities and entire societies, but also for a safer, more sustainable and interdependent world. Goal 4 goes beyond primary education for children and emphasises the importance of equity and quality in education with a lifelong learning approach.

Goals and challenges for inclusive education

SDG Goal 4 includes a number of specific targets, including access to primary and secondary education for all children, eliminating gender inequalities in education, increasing the number of youth and adults with the skills needed for employment and promoting education for sustainable development. However, there are still many challenges that need to be addressed to achieve these goals, such as limited access to education for some population groups, gender inequalities in access to education, lack of teacher training and low investment in education by governments. However, there are also many ways to overcome these challenges, such as international co-operation in teacher training in developing countries, the adoption of inclusion policies and investment in school construction.

Impact of the pandemic on the quality of education

The pandemic has had a major impact on inclusive and equitable education, with school closures, distance learning and learning losses for the most vulnerable students. In Germany, the pandemic has exacerbated inequalities as the percentage of students who graduate but lack sufficient skills has increased. It is therefore necessary to pursue two main lines of action for the future: the recovery of students' cognitive and socio-emotional skills and intervention in aspects that slow down the growth of educational quality, such as the extension of school hours, teacher training and the innovation of school buildings. The pandemic has also emphasised the importance of using technology and innovation for distance learning, opening up new possibilities for the future of inclusive and equitable education.

Education and education for sustainable development

Recognising the importance of education for sustainable development and promoting environmental education is an integral part of the actions to achieve SDG 4. One of the key pillars of 3Bee is education: We run education and awareness-raising projects alongside schools and businesses to raise awareness of what is happening to our planet, and provide useful tools to actively contribute to a positive change that everyone needs to be part of. In April 2023, together with CNC Media, we organised the first edition of the Sustainability Tour to raise awareness of the 2030 Agenda's Sustainable Development Goals among young pupils and students through an ambitious educational project.

Access to inclusive education: policies and initiatives

To ensure inclusive and equal education for all, access to education must be ensured for all women and men, including disadvantaged persons. This can be achieved through inclusive measures and initiatives, such as the creation of scholarship and financial support programmes for low-income families, the removal of language and cultural barriers and the implementation of integration measures for people with disabilities and indigenous peoples. It is also important to promote the active participation of local communities in education and the development of education strategies. Access to education is a fundamental human right, and ensuring this right for all is an important step towards a more equitable and sustainable world.

The situation in Germany: Critical points

The situation of education in Germany with regard to Goal 4 of the SDGs is complex. Despite an improvement from 2010 to 2016 in several indicators such as continuing education, early leavers from the education system and the proportion of university graduates, the positive trend has come to a standstill in recent years. Between 2019 and 2020, there has even been a decline in the proportion of people taking part in further education and cultural activities outside the home. Although the lockdown period has favoured habitual reading, the results of the 2021 Invalsi tests show that 44% of pupils who have completed secondary school do not reach the minimum level in German and 51% do not reach the minimum level in mathematics. This emphasises the urgent need to take action to improve education in Germany.

The importance of continuing education for adults

Adult learning is a key element for the realisation of SDG 4, as it enables people to expand their knowledge and acquire new skills to keep pace with changes in the world of work and society. In addition, it enables lifelong learning to improve people's living conditions and promote their active participation in society. In this context, 3Bee's Sustainable Academy is an important initiative to promote education for sustainable development and lifelong learning. The Sustainable Academy is an innovative training programme designed to raise employees' awareness of environmental sustainability. It is an example of how companies can contribute to achieving Goal 4 by promoting lifelong learning and a sustainability-conscious corporate culture.

Our contribution to equal access to education

To summarise, achieving SDG 4 - ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education for all - is crucial for sustainable development. As we have seen, the pandemic has further highlighted existing inequalities and brought additional challenges to quality education and training. However, there are also opportunities to improve the current situation, for example by adopting policies that promote inclusion and by engaging companies to promote education for sustainable development and lifelong learning. It is important that everyone plays their part in achieving this global goal. At 3Bee, we are committed to SDG 4 together with schools and companies. Get in touch with us to learn more and find out how we can help your organisation make a tangible contribution.
