Net Zero: meaning and international regulatory context

The term 'Net Zero' refers to the balance between greenhouse gas emissions produced by a company and those removed from the atmosphere through natural or technological solutions. The goal is to reduce the net impact of emissions to zero, contributing to limiting global warming to within 1.5°C of pre-industrial levels, as envisaged by the 2015 Paris Agreement. To achieve this goal by 2050, companies must initiate decarbonisation pathways based on direct reductions and offsetting actions. In Italy, the national climate strategy includes targets consistent with the European Green Deal and the Sustainability Reporting Regulation (CSRD), which requires transparency on environmental performance.

Adopting a net-zero strategy: why it is essential

From the environmental point of view, Net Zero strategies generate measurable and lasting benefits: they contribute significantly to climate change mitigation by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, improve air quality, protect biodiversity, and promote the regeneration of natural ecosystems. According to the IPCC, limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5 °C requires achieving zero net emissions by 2050. The report published in Nature Climate Change shows that rapid decarbonisation of manufacturing activities can reduce air pollution, with direct benefits on human health as well. Furthermore, the adoption of low-emission technologies and energy efficiency help reduce pressure on ecosystems and safeguard natural resources.

Net-zero strategy: operational steps and tools

To successfully implement a Net Zero strategy, companies must follow a well-defined process. The first step is the measurement of emissions, using recognised standards such as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. Emissions are to be divided into three categories:
    • Scope 1: direct emissions from business operations.
    • Scope 2: indirect emissions from purchased energy.
    • Scope 3: indirect emissions along the value chain, which include suppliers.
Next, the company must define scientifically validated reduction targets (Science-Based Targets) and develop an operational plan that includes the adoption of renewable energy, energy efficiency and transformation of production processes. Residual emissions should be offset through certified carbon credits. It is important that each stage of the plan is monitored and integrated into corporate governance, with transparent communication to stakeholders

    Continuous monitoring of environmental performance

To ensure the effectiveness of a Net Zero strategy, it is essential to implement a continuous monitoring system based on key performance indicators (KPIs). Among the main tools are the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), to assess the environmental impact throughout the life cycle of products, and the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) standards for sustainability reporting. It is important to distinguish between environmental (CO₂ emissions, energy consumption, resource use), economic (carbon management costs, return on green investments) and social (community impacts, employee involvement) indicators. The use of digital platforms and ESG software enables detailed analysis of environmental data and facilitates mandatory reporting according to new European directives such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

    The XNatura monitoring platform

The Environmental Platform by XNatura is the integrated platform for monitoring and analysing environmental impacts and risks through Thematic Suites in line with ESRS standards for sustainability reporting: Climate Change, Pollution, Water Resources and Biodiversity and Ecosystems. Each Suite focuses on specific indices, providing a clear view of the environmental impacts, dependencies, risks and opportunities associated with business activities and operations. XNatura is under continuous development and evolution, with new releases planned in the coming months to expand data coverage and integrate more detailed information to better meet monitoring, reporting and regulatory compliance needs.
