    Interview With A City Bee...

Hidden among city balconies and rooftops is something you would never expect to find: hives full of bees ready to pollinate city flowers. In recent years, producing honey on the roofs of city buildings has become an increasingly popular phenomenon.

    City bee

This has given rise to so-called urban beekeeping, which has now become an established reality in metropolises such as New York, London and Tokyo. Some say that honey made in the city is healthier because it comes from flowers that have not been chemically treated; some say that bees love to dart between cars and run red lights; some say that keeping bees is easy and that everyone can do it by putting a hive on their terrace. We at 3Bee, aware of the fascination that bees arouse, feel it is only right to shed some light on this. In this regard, we went to interview a city bee, Beeatrice, yesterday: "Hello! My name is Beeatrice and I am a foraging bee collecting nectar and pollen. I like to flutter among the little flowers in gardens and balconies, observe people, marvel, laugh and have breakfast, lunch and dinner with nectar from acacia, chestnut and rhododendron even though, here in the city.

When was the passion for nectar born?

"As long as I can remember, I get up in the morning and start flying. I didn't go to the sommelier school of nettare but that, to this day, has not hindered me. La Vecchia, however, decided to enrol me in the Bottinaggio 1 classes even though I had struggled to pass Cleaning and Trofallassi. I love being a courier and carrying small packages between flowers. I always travel with a notepad, pencil and GPS in my bag so that I can mark the areas where I find the most nectar and its quality. Yesterday, for example, I found a candy factory just over a kilometre from my house!"

Are you experiencing difficulties working in the City?

"To date I have not yet encountered any difficulties, everything is going well. I have great support from gardeners and confectioners (I get my sugar from them most of the time!!). In addition, I have recently found a very good psychologist who is sorting out my personality disorders. I have managed to accept all the daytime noise of the cars but I still have trouble coping with the nightlife!" ...continues... Bees do not produce honey directly in the jar and there is no easy way to get honey on the sideboard. Bees are to be grown constantly.

    Keeping bees is not easy

Why? The answer is simple, without man the domesticated bee would not exist. Without the constant work of man tending them, caring for them and feeding them, these bees would disappear. Do not be convinced by those who tell you that if you put a hive on your balcony then you will have honey for life. Once you have a hive you will have to learn how to keep it healthy! In fact, one of the most important aspects is that bees can get sick and, for this not to happen, health treatments must be carried out. Unfortunately, many bee diseases are transmissible to other hives, so if you take a hive and don't look after it properly it can get sick, infecting other hives in the area. Our Hive-Tech system was also created to help all those who want to approach the world of beekeeping, thanks to the unique starter kit created for you, the hobbyist. To avoid environmental damage and to raise your bees safely, Hive-Tech is made for you.
