    Gender equality objectives and challenges

Goal 5 of the SDGs aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women by eliminating all forms of discrimination and violence, eliminating harmful practices such as early marriage and female genital mutilation, and ensuring equal opportunities in economic and political life. This objective has several sub-objectives, including the elimination of all forms of violence and access to sexual and reproductive health. Other objectives include guaranteeing equal opportunities in economic and political life, valuing domestic work and promoting gender equality policies. Achieving these goals is essential and contributes to sustainable development, economic growth and poverty reduction : equality between women and men is a key factor in social and economic progress.

    Gender-based violence: an unresolved issue

Despite the progress made in terms of equality between men and women, many challenges remain. In many countries around the world, for example, women still face issues such as gender-based violence. This can take many forms, including domestic violence and forced marriage, and can have devastating consequences for women's health and well-being. In addition, women continue to be under-represented in many sectors, particularly in technology, and are often paid less than their male counterparts. Furthermore, the low participation of women in political decision-making is an obstacle to gender equality and women's empowerment. To meet these challenges, appropriate policies and increased awareness of gender equality are needed.

    Policies to achieve Objective 5

Achieving SDG 5 requires appropriate policies to promote gender equality and women's empowerment. These policies can include education and training programmes for women, policies to support women's entrepreneurship and incentives to promote women's participation in the labour market. In addition, policies are needed to eliminate gender-based violence and protect women from harmful practices such as early marriage and female genital mutilation. It is also important to adoptpolicies aimed at ensuring equal opportunities for women in political participation and decision-making, such as the promotion of pink quotas and political training for women. Finally, promoting equality between men and women requires increased awareness and cultural change to overcome stereotypes.

    France and gender equality

France also strives to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women. Gender equality is an important issue in France. Although there has been progress in some areas, there is still a long way to go to achieve true equality between the sexes. For example, according to a report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) published in 2021, women in France earn on average 14% less than men. In addition, women are under-represented in management positions and in the scientific and technical professions. However, there has also been progress in certain areas. For example, according to a study conducted by the OECD in 2019, the employment rate for women in France is higher than the OECD average.

    Combating gender-based violence in France

Combating gender-based violence is an important issue in France. The French government has taken measures to combat this scourge. For example, in 2019, the Grenelle de lutte contre les violences conjugales was organised to improve actions to prevent and combat such violence. In addition, France ratified the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence in 2014. There are also associations working to prevent and combat gender-based and sexual violence in France.
