    What is the Kunming-Montreal Agreement

The Cop15 had as its focus the health and protection of all living species and the Planet. The Conference took place in two phases. The first was held in Kunming, China in 2021, while the second has just concluded in Montreal, Canada. The latter focused on adherence to the historic package of measures drawn up with the aim of protecting biodiversity and regenerating natural ecosystems. The "Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework" (GBF), comprises 4 goals and 23 targets to be achieved by 2030. Such an imminent date underlines how much the loss of biodiversity is causing and will always bring not only to humanity, but to the entire planet.

    Objectives and targets

In particular, the focus is on the protected and nature-representative areas of the planet. These areas are characterised by a governmental control system that is fair and effective in terms of conservation and respects not only the natural elements but also the indigenous peoples that inhabit them. We are talking about 17% of terrestrial areas and 10% of marine areas. The restoration of these areas must therefore be completed. A further goal is therefore to bring the loss of areas of high biodiversity importance to almost zero. The protection of ecosystems is also about reducing food waste and good waste management. Last, but by no means least, is the target on the use of pesticides and harmful chemicals, which must be at least halved.

    The importance of funding

In order to effectively implement national biodiversity strategies and action plans, the level of financial resources available from all sources, public and private, national and international, must be substantially and progressively increased. Financing must be guaranteed and accessible in an equitable manner for all parties, particularly for developing countries, such as LDCs and small states, as well as countries with economies in transition. One of the targets set by the agreement is to mobilise at least USD 200 billion per year by 2030, including through the involvement of private investors. Any investment must comply with Article 20 of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

    3Bee's response

At 3Bee, as a Climate Tech company, we welcome the targets set by the long-awaited and above all necessary conference. This meeting gave voice to a no longer latent need for sustainability and regeneration of biodiversity. Goals and targets are a duty to be maintained and potentially exceeded. The response of our CEO and co-founder Niccolò Calandri perfectly sums up our thoughts on the matter. "This is a first big st step forward for biodiversity, a key aspect for the health of our country that until now has entered little into international discussions. Let's hope that we can learn from the errors made in the Carbon world, avoiding the proliferation of greenwashing initiatives and incentivising those who approach the problem scientifically."
