    Why measuring biodiversity is important

Biodiversity is declining rapidly, and up to a million species are at risk of extinction due to human activities. Global wildlife populations have decreased by 68% on average in the last 50 years, making it urgent to protect ecosystems and the biodiversity they support. Pollinators like bees and butterflies are a good indicator of biodiversity. They support plant reproduction, diverse food webs, and habitats for other wildlife. However, many pollinators are threatened by habitat loss, climate change, and pesticides. It is crucial to restore pollinator populations to safeguard biodiversity and the essential ecosystem services it provides. Mapping and IoT sensors can help address biodiversity loss by monitoring ecosystems, land use changes, and identifying key species and habitats. With this data, we can measure the impact of conservation efforts and track progress towards biodiversity goals.

    The technology for calculating biodiversity

Environmental sustainability has become increasingly relevant in recent years, especially for companies. In fact, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) report shows that 80 percent of Fortune Global 500 companies published a sustainability report in 2021, a significant increase from 72 percent in 2018. According to an IPBES report, the rate of biodiversity and ecosystem loss has increased significantly in recent decades, and human activities are a major cause of this. To address these challenges, companies need reliable tools to monitor and communicate their environmental impact. With the aim of meeting this need, we developed the Environmental Engineering Element-E platform, the only biomonitoring technology that allows us to calculate the first quantitative biodiversity index by objectively analyzing the biodiversity health of an area.

    How Element-E works

To carry out the "biodiversity calculation," we field the following technologies: Flora, a system based on multispectral satellite image analysis developed in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA). A quantitative method that, thanks to artificial intelligence, makes it possible to precisely and continuously define changes in flora in a specific area, with a history of up to 4 years before the start of the project. Spectrum, the 3Bee technology that enables monitoring of fauna-particularly pollinating insects-in a specific area using IoT sensors. Fauna assessment with Spectrum is based on positional (neighboring lands) and temporal (as seasons pass) differential variation, a quantitative analysis that provides transparency and objectivity with the simple installation of a non-invasive technology that replaces sampling in the field.

    Element-E for agribusiness

Conducting regenerative agriculture while ensuring the lowest possible environmental impact and biodiversity protection is one of the main goals of agribusinesses today. The process with Element-E begins from the identification of the agribusiness focus area and continues with the installation of 3Bee plug and play technology, which allows for the automatic collection of local biodiversity data. From these, the biodiversity index is compiled and an annual report is prepared. Based on the level of the index, the agribusinesses involved can obtain Element-E certification and certify their products with the appropriate label. Certifying products with the Element-E label enables farms to enhance the value of their product, distinguish themselves in the market as a sustainable farm, and become part of a community of virtuous supply chains in the field of sustainability.

    Element-E for sustainability reporting

With Element-E we want to offer companies a certified technology-based methodology for obtaining clear and quantifiable KPIs for inclusion in the sustainability report. A way to enhance and certify companies' efforts through technology, in a transparent way and with high quality monitoring. Creating a transparent and reliable sustainability report is indeed a key factor for companies, and Element-E technology is an innovative solution to monitor companies' impact on biodiversity: it provides accurate and reliable data that can be used to achieve corporate sustainable development goals and improve transparency.
